$40,000 event includes UCI-sanctioned White Spot | Delta Road Race
Delta, BC – In just over two weeks, more than 200 professional cyclists from all over North America and around the globe will converge on the British Columbia’s Lower Mainland for Canada’s biggest professional road cycling series – BC Superweek – which begins with the Tour de Delta. The BC Superweek kickoff event features $40,000 in prize money and thousands more in cash and sponsor prize primes.
“Over the years, the communities of North Delta, Ladner, and Tsawwassen have been incredibly welcoming to all the teams and cyclists to open BC Superweek. It’s excellent to see the cooperation and collaboration between the City of Delta, local businesses, and community members. As such, the Tour de Delta continues to grow year after year,” said BC Superweek Series Director Mark Ernsting.
Bordered by the Fraser River to the north, Boundary Bay to the south, and the Strait of Georgia to the west, Delta provides a remarkable backdrop for criterium races on Friday, July 5 in North Delta and Saturday, July 6 in Ladner. The Tour de Delta concludes with the UCI-sanctioned White Spot | Delta Road Race on Sunday, July 7 in Tsawwassen.
“The Tour de Delta has become a major signifier that summer has arrived in Delta. The atmosphere across our communities is festive as cyclists and spectators from around the world take part in this truly thrilling cycling spectacle,” said Mayor George V. Harvie. “On behalf of Delta Council, we are grateful to the outstanding athletes and fans, as well as our tremendous City of Delta staff and volunteers, that help realize this fantastic annual event.”
The UCI-sanctioned White Spot | Delta Road Races offers fans and aspiring cyclists a personal opportunity to see elite professional athletes representing their countries. The men and women wearing the Team Canada jersey on July 7 in Delta will look to accumulate points with an eye on international competition like the World Championships and Olympic Games.
“The White Spot | Delta Road Race is a unique chance to see teams and cyclists who have traveled from across Canada and the United States, and around the world, to compete here in the Lower Mainland. It’s the only UCI-certified road race in British Columbia and we are honoured to have it as part of the Tour de Delta and BC Superweek,” added Ernsting.
BC Superweek is Canada’s biggest professional road cycling series and features more than $140,000 in prize money with nine races over ten days. BC Superweek runs from July 5 – 14 and is made up of the Tour de Delta (July 5 – 7), New West Grand Prix (July 9), Global Relay Gastown Grand Prix (July 10), Giro di Burnaby presented by Appia Development (July 11), PoCo Grand Prix presented by Dominion Lending Centres (July 12), and Tour de White Rock presented by Landmark Premiere Properties (July 13 – 14).
